What's the cheapest way to turn fiat into crypto?
Published card rates run from 1.99% to 5.5% depending on the provider, before fixed and minimum fees, and bank transfers usually cost less. Pick your country, payment method and amount, and we rank each provider by the fee it publishes.
| Provider | Max rate | Fee on $500.00 | Left to convert | Spread | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| BanxaLowestFee shown is the processing fee only | 1.99% (exact) | $9.95 | $490.05 | Typically 2% to 4% (this is where most of the cost sits) | Review |
| Ramp Network | 3.90%min 2.49 | $19.50 | $480.50 | None published; Ramp says its fee covers its margin and payment costs | Review |
| TransakNot in ESMA's MiCA register when checked on 16 Oct 2026; not modelled for the EU | 3.99% + 1 (exact) | $20.95 | $479.05 | 0% to 2.5% over the CoinGecko price | Review |
| MoonPayUS, UK and Canada pages give one cap for every method | 4.50%min 3.99 | $22.50 | $477.50 | Included in the price; no figure published | Review |
Lower is cheaper. Published fees from each provider's own page, checked October 16, 2026: "up to" caps for MoonPay, Ramp and Mercuryo, so your quote can be lower, and exact rates for Transak and Banxa (Transak says a minimum fee may apply but doesn't publish it). Fixed fees and minimums are applied at face value in your currency. Spreads, network fees and partner-app fees are extra.

How the on-ramp calculator works
By Matilde Ferreira · Updated
What does the on-ramp cost calculator show?
It shows the fee each on-ramp publishes for buying crypto with the amount, country and payment method you pick, ranked from the lowest fee. An on-ramp is the payment company behind the "Buy" button in a wallet or app; this tool compares MoonPay, Transak, Ramp, Banxa and Mercuryo on their own fee pages, not on quotes we were given.
For each provider the fee is the published percentage plus any fixed fee, raised to the minimum fee when the result falls below it. The spread built into the exchange rate is shown as text next to the fee, because only some providers put a number on it. Network fees and the extra fees some wallet apps add are not included.
How do you read the results?
"Max rate" is the provider's published cap: MoonPay, Ramp and Mercuryo publish "up to" rates, so a live quote can be lower. Transak's and Banxa's rates are exact, with no "up to", though Transak says a minimum fee may apply without publishing the amount. "Left to convert" is your amount minus the fee, before the spread and the network fee.
| Provider | Card | Bank transfer | Spread |
|---|---|---|---|
| Banxa | $9.95 (1.99% processing) | $0 processing | Typically 2% to 4% on top |
| Ramp | $19.50 (up to 3.9%) | Not offered | None published |
| Transak | $20.95 (3.99% + $1) | $11.00 (2% + $1) | 0% to 2.5% |
| MoonPay | $22.50 (up to 4.5%) | $22.50 (up to 4.5%) | Included, no figure |
Read the spread column before picking a winner. Banxa's processing fee is the lowest, but Banxa says its spread is typically 2% to 4%, which on $500 is another $10 to $20. Ramp says its fee covers its margin and payment costs, and it publishes no separate spread.
Why are small crypto purchases so expensive?
Minimum and fixed fees. On a €50 card purchase in the EU, MoonPay's minimum fee of €3.99 works out at about 8% (about 9% through a partner app, where its minimum can reach €4.50), and Ramp's minimum of up to €2.49 at about 5%, well above their percentage caps. By bank transfer the same minimums apply. If you can, buy less often in larger amounts, or check whether the app you use adds its own partner fee on top.
Where do the fee numbers come from?
- MoonPay: its EU pricing disclosure (cards up to 4.5%, bank transfers up to 1%, minimum €3.99) and its US disclosure, which gives one cap of up to 4.5% for every method; its UK and Canadian pages carry the US text.
- Transak: its fee page (card and Apple Pay 3.99% + $1, Google Pay 3.99%, bank transfer 2% + $1). We don't model it for the EU: it wasn't in ESMA's register of authorised crypto firms when we checked on 16 October 2026, and its terms route EU residents to its UK company.
- Ramp: its help article dated 25 June 2025 (cards up to 3.9% in USD, EUR or GBP and up to 5.45% in other currencies, manual bank transfer up to 1.40%, minimum up to €2.49). Ramp lists no ACH option in the US.
- Banxa: its pricing article dated 15 May 2025 (1.99% on card and Apple Pay, 0% on other methods, spread typically 2% to 4%).
- Mercuryo, which we have not reviewed yet: its fee article dated 15 July 2026 (cards up to 5.5% with a €1 minimum, bank transfers up to 3% with a €2 minimum). In the EU its crypto service is provided by Criptan Trade, S.L.
- Sardine and Onmeta publish no fees, so we leave them out rather than guess.
Frequently asked questions
What fees does MoonPay charge?
In the EU, up to 4.5% on cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal, and up to 1% on bank transfers, with a minimum fee of €3.99. Its US disclosure gives one cap of up to 4.5% for every method, with a minimum of up to $3.99. MoonPay says a spread is included in the price but publishes no figure, and buying through a partner app can add an ecosystem fee.
What is the cheapest way to buy crypto through an on-ramp?
Usually a bank transfer, where the provider offers one, and a larger amount so minimum fees matter less. Compare the spread too: a low processing fee can hide a wider spread.
Why is my quote different from the calculator?
The calculator uses each provider's published rate. For MoonPay, Ramp and Mercuryo that rate is an "up to" cap, so a live quote can be lower. Any quote can be higher once the spread, the network fee, a partner-app fee, a minimum fee the provider doesn't publish (Transak says one may apply) or your bank's own foreign-currency charge is added.
Do on-ramp fees count toward my cost basis?
In the US, yes. The IRS says your basis in crypto you buy includes the fees and other acquisition costs you pay, which lowers the gain when you later sell.
