De un vistazo
Trust Wallet is a free self-custodial wallet founded in 2017 and bought by Binance in 2018. After a 2023 share sale it runs as a separate company that the press describes as owned by Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao, and Binance says its exchange group has neither owned nor controlled it since May 2025. It says it supports more than 100 blockchains and over 200 million users (company claims; the user figure may count downloads). Keys are created and encrypted on your device. The one documented mobile flaw we found dates from 2018, while the browser extension was compromised in December 2025, when a malicious update drained 2,520 Trust Wallet addresses. Only Wallet Core and some developer tools and SDKs are open source.
Phone users who hold coins on many different chains, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, BNB Chain, TON, Cosmos and Aptos, and want one free app to send, swap and stake them.
You mainly use a desktop browser and are uneasy about the extension's 2022 and 2025 incidents, you need open-source app code, or you want hardware-wallet signing on your phone (Trust Wallet documents Ledger pairing only for the browser extension).

Trust Wallet review: the short answer
Trust Wallet is a free self-custody app that says it supports more than 100 blockchains. The one documented flaw we found in its mobile app dates back to 2018. The browser extension has a worse record.
In December 2025 a poisoned extension update drained 2,520 Trust Wallet addresses, and Trust Wallet ties about $8.5 million to the attacker's addresses. Many "Trust Wallet scam" cases, though, involve fake support, phishing and investment fraud aimed at users, not a fault in the app.
We checked every fact in this Trust Wallet review against Trust Wallet's own help center and post-mortems, CVE records, court filings, IRS pages and FBI data on 16 October 2026. Several things changed this year: a new CEO, 24 networks dropped in September, and the reimbursement claims process for the December 2025 extension hack.
- Good fit: you use your phone, you hold coins on many different chains, and you want one free app for Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, BNB Chain, TON, Cosmos and more.
- Look elsewhere: you mostly use a desktop browser and are uneasy about the extension's history, you need open-source app code, or you want a hardware wallet on your phone (Trust Wallet documents Ledger pairing only for the browser extension).
Who owns Trust Wallet in 2026?
Trust Wallet is a separate company, no longer part of Binance. Binance bought it in 2018. After a 2023 share sale, the press describes it as owned by Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ).
Binance says its exchange group has neither owned nor controlled it since May 2025.
Viktor Radchenko founded Trust Wallet in 2017. Binance announced the purchase on 31 July 2018. It was Binance's first acquisition, paid with a mix of cash, Binance stock and BNB. Eowyn Chen, a former Binance marketing VP, ran the company from 2022. She has since left: CoinDesk reported in May 2026 that she became Binance's interim chief marketing officer. Felix Fan is now CEO.
The commercial ties to Binance are still close. Trust Wallet's security page sends bug reports to Binance's Bugcrowd program, lists Binance as a security partner, and the app advertises deposits through Binance Pay. CZ, who pleaded guilty to a US anti-money-laundering violation in 2023, received a presidential pardon in October 2025. We found no source that links the pardon to any change in who owns or runs Trust Wallet.
What does Trust Wallet support?
Trust Wallet says it supports more than 100 blockchains and over 10 million assets. It runs on iOS and Android, and as a browser extension. There is no desktop app.
The extension is officially supported on Chrome. It can also be added to Brave, Edge and Opera, but it is not available for Firefox or Safari.
The chain list covers Bitcoin, Ethereum, Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, Polygon, BNB Chain, Solana, TON, Cosmos, Polkadot, Aptos and Sui, among others. The engine underneath is Wallet Core, an open-source library that can sign for more than 130 chains.
The list got shorter on 15 September 2026. Trust Wallet ended support for 24 networks, including Moonbeam, Moonriver, MultiversX, Nano, IoTeX, Polygon zkEVM, Stride and Agoric. Trust Handles, the readable usernames built on FIO, ended on 7 September. Your coins on those chains still exist. The EVM networks among them can be re-added in Trust Wallet as custom networks; for the nine non-EVM ones (Agoric, Decred, FIO, Firo, Flux, MultiversX, Nano, Nimiq and Stride) you need another wallet that can import your recovery phrase.
Is Trust Wallet safe?
The mobile app is a reasonably safe self-custody wallet: keys are created and encrypted on your phone, and Trust Wallet says it never has access to them. The browser extension has failed twice, in 2022 and in December 2025.
The one documented mobile flaw we found affected wallets made by the 2018 iOS app. The apps themselves are not open source.
How Trust Wallet holds your keys
Trust Wallet creates a 12-word (or 24-word) recovery phrase on your device and encrypts the keys there. It says it never stores or has access to your recovery phrase or private keys. The flip side is blunt, in Trust Wallet's own words: if you lose the phrase, "there is no way to recover your wallet. Even Trust Wallet cannot help you regain access."
A passcode or biometrics lock the app, and you can require authentication before signing. An optional encrypted backup can go to your own iCloud or Google Drive, protected by a password Trust Wallet cannot reset.
Audits, certifications and open source
| Check | What we found (October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Browser extension audits | CertiK (February 2023) and Cure53 (April 2023); no newer extension audit is on Trust Wallet's public list |
| Other published audits | CertiK and Halborn (SWIFT wallet, June 2023), Kudelski (a cryptography library, September 2023), Salus (penetration test, April 2024), Halborn (swap contract, May 2024; smart account, April 2025), Quantstamp (paymaster and smart account, March 2025) |
| Certifications | ISO/IEC 27001 and ISO/IEC 27701, announced 7 February 2024 after an A-LIGN assessment |
| Bug bounty | Run through Binance's Bugcrowd program; we could not confirm its current maximum payout, but Trust Wallet paid a $100,000 bounty in 2023 |
| Source code | Wallet Core is open source (Apache 2.0); the mobile apps and extension are closed |
The gap that matters is timing. The last extension audit on the list is from April 2023, more than two years before the December 2025 compromise. That incident did not come from a code bug an audit would catch. It does show the extension's release process needed more scrutiny.
Security features
- Security Scanner. It simulates a transaction, checks the destination against known scam and drainer contracts, and warns about risky token approvals. Trust Wallet itself calls it "a prompt to look closer, not a guarantee". The company says it stopped more than $191 million from reaching known scam addresses in 2025.
- Swap protections. Fake-token and honeypot checks, plus MEV protection on supported Solana swaps.
- Ledger support. You can sign with a Ledger in the browser extension (added February 2023). We found no hardware wallet support in the mobile app.
The December 2025 browser-extension hack
On 24 December 2025 a malicious version 2.68 of the Chrome extension was published to the Chrome Web Store. The attacker used a leaked Chrome Web Store API key to skip Trust Wallet's internal release review. Trust Wallet says it has "high confidence" the breach is "likely related" to Shai-Hulud, a self-spreading npm worm that exposed developers' secrets in November 2025, and that its investigation into the exact attack vector is ongoing.
The poisoned code stole recovery phrases from people who opened and unlocked version 2.68 between 24 and 26 December. A clean version 2.69 went out on 25 December. Version 2.68 users whose first login came after 11:00 UTC on 26 December were not affected, and neither were the mobile app or other extension versions.
Early counts put losses at over $6 million (ZachXBT) and about $7 million (CZ). Trust Wallet's post-mortem, last updated 17 July 2026, identified 2,520 drained Trust Wallet addresses. It ties about $8.5 million in assets to 17 attacker addresses, which also drained some wallets outside Trust Wallet. Trust Wallet chose to reimburse affected users voluntarily, case by case. According to a Trust Wallet post on X, reported by crypto news outlets on 15 January 2026, the first batch had been paid, and the claims deadline was 14 February 2026. Its post-mortem does not give these dates, and as of October 2026 Trust Wallet has not published a total amount repaid.
Known incidents and legal cases
| Date | What happened | Loss | Outcome |

| 2018 iOS app (exploited July 2023, disclosed January 2024) | Weak randomness in wallets created by the 2018 iOS app (CVE-2024-23660) | SECBIT estimated over 2,100 victims and over 1,360 ETH on Ethereum alone | Trust Wallet says the bug was "highly unlikely" to be the main cause of the 2023 drains; no reimbursement reported |
| 14 to 23 November 2022 | Extension generated weak keys (CVE-2023-31290), found by Ledger's Donjon team | About $170,000 stolen in two exploits | Fixed on 21 November 2022, disclosed in April 2023, reimbursement offered |
| 24 to 26 December 2025 | Malicious extension version 2.68 published with a leaked store key | About $8.5 million tied to attacker addresses; 2,520 Trust Wallet addresses drained | Voluntary reimbursement; claims deadline 14 February 2026 (per news reports); total paid not published |
| August 2025 (filed) | Lin v. Trust Wallet Inc., a class action in New York alleging the dApp browser surfaced fraudulent investment sites without warnings | The lead plaintiff alleged losses of $150,000 to $171,177 (his filings give both figures) | On 9 September 2026 the court sent the claims to individual arbitration under Trust Wallet's terms and paused the case; no ruling on the allegations |
Is Trust Wallet a cold wallet?
No. Trust Wallet is a hot wallet: the keys live on an internet-connected phone or browser. For cold storage, pair the browser extension with a Ledger, or keep long-term savings on a hardware wallet. Trust Wallet does not sell a hardware wallet or an official card, so treat any "Trust Card" offer as a scam. Our Ledger review and Trezor review cover the hardware options.
Is Trust Wallet legit, or a scam?
Trust Wallet is legit: a real company, founded in 2017 and once owned by Binance. The scams documented below all work by tricking the user, not by exploiting a fault in the wallet.
Scammers pose as support staff, recovery services or the app itself to get your recovery phrase. Others get you to sign an approval that empties the wallet.
Trust Wallet's help center sets two rules that defeat the fake-support and phishing scams below: support "will never ask for your seed phrase, private key, or password", and the company "will never contact users via unofficial channels such as WhatsApp or X/Twitter direct messages". Its only support channel is support.trustwallet.com.
| Scam | How it works | How to avoid it |
|---|---|---|
| Fake support and "helplines" | Fake agents on Discord, Telegram and X, and fake phone numbers in search results, invent a problem and ask for your phrase | Trust Wallet has no phone helpline; use support.trustwallet.com only |
| Recovery-phrase phishing | Emails or sites ask you to "verify" or "fix" your wallet; during the 2025 hack, a site called fix-trustwallet posed as a repair tool | No real fix ever needs your phrase |
| Fake recovery services | Lookalike domains promise to recover stolen funds for a fee or your key | The FBI logged 10,516 recovery-scam complaints and $1.4 billion in losses in 2025 |
| Fake apps and extensions | Copies of the app on unofficial sites, fake compensation forms after the hack, and trojanized wallet apps: in April 2026 Kaspersky reported 26 App Store phishing apps, found in March, pushing infected copies of wallets including Trust Wallet | Install from trustwallet.com/download, the App Store or Google Play; never install a wallet through a configuration profile; there is no Firefox version, so any Firefox "Trust Wallet" add-on is fake |
| Approval drainers | A fake "send USDT" page, reached by QR code in one documented 2026 campaign, asks for an unlimited token approval | Read every approval request; Trust Wallet warns that approving one "can drain your wallet instantly" |
| Airdrop and copycat tokens | Unsolicited tokens whose names are links, or fakes that copy a real token's name and logo | Never visit links in token names; check the contract |
| Address poisoning | A tiny transfer from a lookalike address plants a fake entry in your history | Use the address book, check the middle characters, send a test amount |
| "Pig butchering" | A long online relationship steers you to a fake investment platform | Crypto investment fraud, which includes pig butchering, was the FBI's costliest crypto fraud category in 2025: $7.2 billion |
Impostor sites go beyond phishing pages. In July 2026 the Hong Kong Monetary Authority warned about a site calling itself "Trust Wallet" at a lookalike .uk.com address. Trust Wallet's official website and help center are on trustwallet.com and its subdomains, such as support.trustwallet.com.
The FBI's 2025 internet crime report counted 181,565 complaints involving cryptocurrency, with $11.37 billion in reported losses. If you are hit, report it at ic3.gov and to the FTC. Then move any remaining funds to a new wallet with a new recovery phrase.
What happens if you lose your recovery phrase?
You lose the wallet, unless you still have the phrase, its private key, or an encrypted cloud backup and its password. Trust Wallet cannot rebuild any of them for you.
To restore on a new phone, install Trust Wallet from an official store, choose "I already have a wallet", select Secret Phrase, enter the words in the exact order and restore. Trust Wallet blocks screenshots during the manual backup screen for a reason: write the phrase on paper and keep it offline.
What fees does Trust Wallet charge?
The app is free, and sending or receiving costs only the network fee. Buying crypto costs a provider fee, and swaps include network and provider costs plus, according to some Trust Wallet pages, a small platform fee.
| Action | What you pay (October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Download and hold | Free |
| Send or receive | Network fee only; FlexGas lets you pay gas in TWT, USDT or USDC on BNB Chain, Ethereum, Arbitrum, OP Mainnet and Base |
| Swap | Network fee, provider fee and spread; Trust Wallet's pages disagree on whether a platform fee is added, and no rate is published; some 2026 campaigns waive it on eligible pairs |
| Buy crypto | Provider fee: Trust Wallet estimates 0.5% to 1.5% by bank transfer and 2.5% to 4% by card or Apple Pay; Revolut Pay in the EEA has no provider fee |
| Sell crypto | MoonPay or Ramp fees, shown before you confirm |
| Staking | Validator commission and network fees; for ETH staking, Trust Wallet says it takes no part of the commission |
The swap fee is the one to watch. Trust Wallet's swap page says it charges no extra service fee. Its own AI-facing product file says it "charges a small platform fee on swaps", and its campaign posts refer to a "standard applicable fee". Until the company publishes a rate, compare its final quote with a DEX aggregator before large swaps.
Staking runs inside the app on about 20 assets, from BNB and SOL to ATOM and TRX. ETH staking is pooled staking provided by Kiln, live since January 2024, with a 0.025 ETH minimum. Rewards vary by network, and unstaking can take days.
Buying runs through partners such as MoonPay, Simplex, Ramp, Banxa, Mercuryo and Transak, and Trust Wallet's terms say it may receive a revenue share from their fees. US users gained two options in 2026: paying for MoonPay purchases from a Cash App balance (August) and a MoonPay checkout inside the app (October).
How do you withdraw from Trust Wallet to a bank account?
Use the in-app Sell option, which hands you to MoonPay or Ramp to pay out to your bank, or send your crypto to an exchange, sell it there and withdraw. Both routes require identity checks with the partner or exchange.
- In the app, open the asset, choose Sell, and pick MoonPay or Ramp.
- Complete the provider's identity check (name, address, email and ID for MoonPay) and add your bank details.
- Send the crypto to the provider's deposit address shown in the flow. The payout arrives by bank transfer; Ramp also pays to Visa cards in many countries.
The exchange route works wherever you can open an exchange account. Send to your own account at an exchange such as Coinbase or Kraken, using the deposit address for the exact network, and send a test amount first.
What about Cash App? Trust Wallet's Cash App integration is for buying only. There is no direct "sell to Cash App" button. You can sell to your bank through MoonPay or Ramp, or send Bitcoin on-chain to your Cash App bitcoin address, subject to Cash App's own rules and limits.
Does Trust Wallet require KYC?
Not for the wallet. Trust Wallet asks for no email, phone number or ID to create a wallet, hold, send or swap. Identity checks only happen inside partner flows such as MoonPay buys and sells.
Can the IRS see your Trust Wallet?
Trust Wallet is unlikely to report to the IRS: it collects no identity data, and the IRS excludes pure wallet software from broker reporting. Your activity is still not hidden.
Every transaction is public on the blockchain. US exchanges you sell through file Form 1099-DA under your name, and on-ramp partners such as MoonPay are likely brokers too.
- Trust Wallet is very unlikely to be a reporting broker. The IRS's Form 1099-DA instructions exclude anyone who "only provide[s] hardware or software" that lets you control your own keys "without providing other functions or services". The IRS has not addressed in-app swaps and buys specifically. A 2024 rule aimed at DeFi front ends was overturned by Congress in April 2025.
- Exchanges do report. Brokers report gross proceeds for sales from 1 January 2025, and from 2026 also cost basis for assets bought in 2026 or later and held in your account there.
- The Form 1040 question applies. Answer "Yes" if you received staking rewards, swapped, or sold. Moving coins between your own wallets is usually "No", but the IRS says the answer changes if you paid the transaction fee with crypto, so a self-transfer that pays gas in ETH or BNB needs a "Yes".
- Staking rewards are income. Under Revenue Ruling 2023-14 you include their fair market value when you gain control of them.
- Tools. Trust Wallet points users to Coinpanda, Koinly and CoinTracker for tax reports.
Our US crypto tax guide for 2026 goes further. This is general information, not tax advice.
TWT, Trust Premium and FlexGas: do you need them?
No. TWT is optional. You can send, receive, swap and stake without ever holding it. It only matters if you want fee discounts and loyalty perks.
TWT is a BEP-20 token on BNB Chain with a permanently fixed supply of about 1 billion after Trust Wallet burned about 99% of the original 90 billion in October 2020. Trust Premium, part of TWT's 2025 relaunch, ranks users as Bronze, Silver or Gold in 14-day cycles based on activity points, with TWT locking speeding things up. Perks include 20% to 50% off gas paid in TWT and time-limited swap-fee discounts. FlexGas, launched in May 2025, lets you pay gas in TWT, USDT or USDC on supported EVM chains. Treat TWT as a volatile asset, not a feature you need.
What else is new in Trust Wallet?
Trust Wallet has added trading features fast in 2026, and many of them are blocked in the US and the UK.
- Perpetual futures through Hyperliquid (from April 2026) and Aster, not available in the US, UK or Hong Kong.
- Prediction markets from Hyperliquid, Polymarket, Predict.fun and Myriad, each geofenced by the provider.
- Tokenized stocks (bStocks on BNB Chain), not available in the US, UK or EU, and support for Robinhood Chain.
- Trust Wallet AI (July 2026), an assistant that can prepare swaps and sends for you to confirm. It shares your wallet address and balance with an outside AI provider, which Trust Wallet says does not train on the data.
- Agent Kit (March 2026), developer tools that let AI agents hold and spend from wallets within set limits.
Trust Wallet vs Phantom, MetaMask and Exodus
Choose Trust Wallet for broad chain coverage on a phone: more than 100 blockchains, by its own count. The others each win somewhere narrower.
Pick Phantom for a polished Solana experience. Pick MetaMask or Rabby for Ethereum apps on desktop. Exodus suits people who want a desktop portfolio app run by a US-listed company.
- Phantom supports 9 networks and charges a published 0.85% on most swaps. It has no TON, Cosmos or Aptos.
- MetaMask focuses on Ethereum and its layer 2s, and added Solana (May 2025) and native Bitcoin (December 2025).
- Trust Wallet also covers Cosmos, TON and Aptos, none of which Phantom supports.
See all our picks on the crypto wallets hub.
Should you use Trust Wallet?
For a mobile user with coins on many chains, yes. It saves you from juggling four or five wallets.
Apart from a flaw in wallets created by the 2018 iOS app, we found no documented security failures in the mobile app. Keep the recovery phrase offline. Ignore anyone who contacts you claiming to be support, and read every approval before you sign.
Be more careful with the browser extension. It has failed twice, and its last public audit predates the 2025 compromise. If you use it, pair it with a Ledger for larger balances. Frequent swappers should check the final quote, since Trust Wallet does not publish its swap fee. We score wallets on security, chain support, ease of use, pricing and transparency; see how we score wallets.
