  • · Monthly custodian statements (Copper, Ceffu, Anchorage, FalconX SPV)
  • · Weekly proof of reserves (Harris & Trotter, Chaos Labs, LlamaRisk, Chainlink)

A favor

  • Native yield through sUSDe: 4.81% 30-day average and 4.51% 90-day average on 14 October 2026, with a one-day unstaking cooldown
  • Backing exceeded supply at 101.34% including the $62 million Reserve Fund in the 27 September 2026 attestation
  • No freeze or blacklist function on the USDe token itself, unlike USDT and USDC
  • Ethena says mint and redeem kept working through the October 2025 crash, and about $1.93 billion of USDe was redeemed in two weeks after the April 2026 bridge exploit
  • Contracts audited by Zellic, Quantstamp, Spearbit, Pashov and Code4rena, with an Immunefi bug bounty of up to $3 million

En contra

  • 52.9% of backing sat in Ethena's Coinbase on-chain wallets at 27 September 2026, evidenced by on-chain links rather than a custodian statement
  • No audit-standard reserve report from an accounting firm and no dollar redemption: whitelisted users redeem for digital assets, everyone else must sell
  • Fell to about $0.65 on Binance during the 10 October 2025 crash, and supply shrank from $14.82 billion to $3.75 billion within seven months
  • US persons cannot mint, redeem or use the Ethena app; sUSDe is not offered in the EU or EEA
  • sUSDe rewards are discretionary and depend on funding rates, lending demand and exchange positions

What is USDe? The short answer

What is USDe? It is Ethena's "synthetic dollar": a token that aims to stay at $1 without a bank account behind it. Ethena backs it with crypto and stablecoins, and it neutralises the price risk of the crypto with short perpetual futures. On 16 October 2026 USDe was worth about $4.69 billion on CoinGecko, ranked 23rd among crypto assets, down from a peak of $14.82 billion in October 2025.

That design makes USDe a different product from USDC or USDT. There is no dollar redemption and no audit-standard reserve report from an accounting firm. US persons cannot mint or redeem, and Ethena is not a permitted issuer under the US GENIUS Act. What it offers instead is yield: staked USDe, called sUSDe, averaged 4.81% over the 30 days to 14 October 2026. The rest of this page explains where that yield comes from and what can go wrong.

How does USDe hold its dollar value?

Ethena pairs each dollar of crypto it holds with an equal short position in perpetual futures, so a fall in the crypto price is offset by a gain on the short. The Ethena documentation calls this the basis trade. When traders pay to be long, which has been the usual state of crypto markets, the short side collects funding payments, and that has historically been a large part of the yield.

The mix changes with market conditions. Through most of 2026 funding was thin, so Ethena held mostly stablecoins and lent them out instead. The basis trade was negligible in July 2026, then grew to 17% of backing by 30 September, according to Ethena's Q3 2026 governance report. Ethena has also started running the same trade on tokenised gold and tokenised equities.

On 16 October 2026 Ethena's live dashboard showed $4.70 billion of backing, made up as follows:

Backing asset (dashboard, 16 Oct 2026)US$ millionShare
Liquid cash (stablecoins, lending, RWAs)4,029.985.7%
Bitcoin, hedged391.18.3%

What backs USDe, and who checks it?

Each month Ethena publishes statements from its custodians rather than an accountant's report. The latest, a snapshot at 27 September 2026 published on 10 October, showed $4.953 billion of backing against 4.949 billion USDe, or 101.34% once the Reserve Fund is included.

The biggest single block, 52.9% of backing, sits in wallets Ethena controls through Coinbase's on-chain wallet product, and the attestation evidences it with on-chain links, not a signed custodian statement. Readers can check those addresses themselves, which is a form of transparency. It is not the same as an independent firm confirming the assets, and no ISAE 3000 or AICPA-standard report has been published for USDe. Ethena also runs a weekly proof of reserves with Harris & Trotter, Chaos Labs, LlamaRisk and Chainlink, launched in April 2025, which checks that backing at least equals supply and stays delta neutral.

The Reserve Fund is Ethena's buffer for weeks when funding turns negative. It held $62.09 million on 16 October 2026, about 1.3% of supply, and its month-end balance has never fallen materially since December 2024.

Is USDe safe?

USDe has held up through two hard tests, but it carries risks that a cash-and-Treasuries coin does not. The main ones, in rough order of size:

  • Concentration. More than half the backing sits in one set of wallets, evidenced on-chain rather than by a custodian. A failure or freeze there would hit most of the reserve.
  • Exchange exposure. The hedges run on exchanges. On 16 October 2026 Ethena's dashboard allocated 12.0% of backing to positions on Binance, 3.8% to OKX and 2.3% to Bybit. Collateral for those positions sits with off-exchange custodians, which Ethena says limits the damage if an exchange fails. After the February 2025 Bybit hack it says it realised its $30 million of unrealised profit on Bybit within 90 minutes.
  • Funding risk. When funding rates turn negative, the short side pays instead of earning. The Reserve Fund exists for that, and it is small next to a sustained bad stretch.
  • Exit risk. Most holders cannot redeem with Ethena and must sell into a market. In a rush for the exit, the market price can fall well below the backing value, as it did on Binance in October 2025.
  • Bridge risk. USDe on other chains moves through LayerZero bridges. After the April 2026 rsETH exploit hit a different token on the same infrastructure, Ethena paused its bridges, raised its verifier quorum to four of four and kept a $10 million per hour limit on each route, per its post-incident note.

The terms are blunt about it: Ethena "does not guarantee that the value of one (1) USDe will always or ever equal 1 USD" on any platform, according to the USDe terms. Smart-contract risk looks lower. The contracts were audited by Zellic, Quantstamp, Spearbit, Pashov and Code4rena in 2023 and 2024, and Ethena runs an Immunefi bug bounty paying up to $3 million, live since April 2024.

Has USDe ever lost its peg?

Yes, briefly, and most sharply on a single venue. The worst USDe depeg was a local price failure on Binance rather than a backing shortfall.

DateLowWhat happened

10 Oct 2025about $0.65 on Binance onlyDuring a market crash with more than $19 billion of liquidations in a day, USDe fell to 65 cents on Binance, CoinDesk reported; Ethena founder Guy Young blamed Binance for pricing USDe off its own thin order book. Binance later paid about $283 million in compensation across USDe and two other affected tokens
9 Feb 2026$0.9862Brief dip in CoinGecko's hourly price
April 2026No peg break, per EthenaAfter the rsETH bridge exploit, Ethena paused its bridges and holders redeemed about $1.93 billion over two weeks

Two lessons follow. First, in the October 2025 crash one exchange's price broke while, Ethena says, mint and redeem kept working for whitelisted users, so where you hold USDe matters. Second, supply can shrink fast. USDe fell from $14.82 billion on 4 October 2025 to $3.75 billion at its 2026 low on 28 April, per DefiLlama, and it was $4.73 billion on 16 October 2026.

How does sUSDe yield work?

You stake USDe into the sUSDe vault, and the value of each sUSDe rises as Ethena adds rewards. On 14 October 2026 Ethena's yield feed showed a 30-day average of 4.81% and a 90-day average of 4.51%; the average since launch is 10.34%, built mostly in the high-funding markets of 2024. About 1.2 billion USDe, a quarter of supply, was staked.

The fine print matters more than the headline rate. Rewards are "fully discretionary", paid weekly by an Ethena Foundation subsidiary, and they can fall to zero; they cannot go negative. To leave sUSDe you start a cooldown, then claim your USDe. Ethena cut the cooldown from seven days to one day on 16 March 2026. The contract allows up to 90.

sUSDe is not offered to residents of the EU or the EEA, and the contract can block US-based addresses from staking.

The yield also beats what US issuers may pay, which is nothing: the GENIUS Act bans permitted stablecoin issuers from paying interest. That gap is a large part of USDe's appeal, and USDe sits outside those US rules. Our guide to stable yield accounts compares this kind of product with bank-style alternatives.

Who can mint and redeem USDe?

Only whitelisted "Mint Users" who pass Ethena's KYC and business checks, and US persons are excluded. Redemption does not pay dollars. It pays tokens. Ethena (BVI) Limited promises each redeemed USDe its pro rata share of the reserves, up to $1, "in supported digital assets", which in practice means stablecoins such as USDC or USDT. Ethena reports that minting and redeeming against USDC became free for onboarded users in July 2026.

Everyone else buys and sells USDe on exchanges or on-chain pools. That works smoothly in calm markets. In a panic, though, a retail holder who cannot reach the mint-and-redeem contract has to accept whatever price the pool or exchange offers at that moment, which is why the October 2025 Binance price and the backing value told such different stories on the same evening.

Can Ethena freeze USDe?

Not the USDe token itself. Ethena's technical documentation says there is no ability to freeze USDe funds, and on Solana the token's freeze authority is set to null. That is unusual for a dollar token and a real difference from USDT and USDC.

The staked version is different. The sUSDe contract has a blacklister role that can stop an address from staking, or fully restrict it from moving sUSDe for sanctions or law-enforcement reasons, and Ethena can then redistribute fully restricted balances. Ethena says only the full restriction has been used in practice. Both contracts are owned by a timelock contract with a one-day minimum delay.

Is USDe legal in the US, the EU and the UK?

Holding USDe is not banned in any of the three, but none of them regulates it as a stablecoin, and Ethena keeps US users out of its app and does not offer sUSDe in the EU.

  • United States. The GENIUS Act defines a payment stablecoin by an issuer's obligation to redeem for a fixed amount of money. USDe's terms promise a pro rata share of digital assets instead, and Ethena is not a permitted issuer. No regulator has ruled on USDe's status. Ethena's terms list the United States as a prohibited jurisdiction for its app. Its US-facing product is a different coin, USDtb, issued by Anchorage Digital Bank since 13 October 2025.
  • European Union. Germany's BaFin acted against Ethena GmbH in 2025, finding that it "had been issuing an asset-referenced token called USDe" without authorisation. BaFin ordered the business wound up on 14 April 2025, opened a redemption window in June, and treated the German entity as wound up from 7 August 2025, according to its notices. USDe is not on ESMA's MiCA register.
  • United Kingdom. The FCA's new regime starts on 25 October 2027. Its final guidance says tokens that keep their value "partly or wholly through algorithmic methods or other means rather than underlying backing assets" are not qualifying stablecoins. The FCA has not named USDe. Ethena's staking materials say they are not directed at UK persons.

Watch the name, too. Since 26 June 2026 the Nasdaq ticker USDE has belonged to StablecoinX Inc., a company that holds Ethena's ENA governance token. Buying that share is not buying the stablecoin.

Which blockchains is USDe on?

USDe is issued on Ethereum and carried to about 30 other networks through LayerZero. Most of it sits on five chains, per DefiLlama on 16 October 2026:

NetworkUSDe (US$ million)
Ethereum2,452.7
Plasma575.8
Solana428.0
Base388.9
Robinhood Chain357.0
TON, Monad, BNB Chain, Mantle and othersabout 490

Ethena's address list is the place to confirm a contract before you buy. Several older layer-2 deployments, including Arbitrum and Optimism, now hold very little USDe, so liquidity there is thin.

USDe competes with yield products more than with payment stablecoins. Compare it with a money market fund or a lending vault, and price in the exit and custody risks above. It is also a cousin of Sky's USDS, which pays a savings rate from a very different balance sheet built mostly on USDC and crypto-backed loans.

How is USDe taxed in the US?

US persons cannot use Ethena's app, but USDe still reaches US holders through exchanges and on-chain markets. The IRS treats all digital assets as property, so selling or swapping USDe is a taxable disposal, and brokers report digital asset sales on Form 1099-DA, per the IRS digital assets page. The IRS has published no guidance specific to sUSDe's rising exchange rate, so treat that as a question for a tax adviser. Our US crypto tax guide covers the general rules.

Who should hold USDe?

USDe suits experienced DeFi users outside the US and EU who want dollar exposure with a market-driven yield, and who understand that the yield comes from trading positions, lending and custody arrangements that can go wrong. It is a tool for people who would otherwise run the basis trade themselves.

It does not suit savers who want a cash equivalent. It pays nothing unless staked, has no dollar redemption, keeps most backing in one set of wallets and sits outside US, EU and UK stablecoin rules. If you want a regulated dollar, USDC is the plain choice; if you want a dollar yield, compare sUSDe with the alternatives on our stablecoin hub before you stake. New to the topic?
