How we score crypto neobanks

Skrumble scores every crypto-enabled neobank from 0 to 5 on five pillars: Crypto Feature Breadth (25%), Banking Features (25%), Fees (20%), Asset Coverage (15%) and Trust & Compliance (15%). The overall score is the weighted average, rounded to one decimal. We work from the bank's licences, its crypto terms and fee documents, and the registers that show which company actually provides the crypto service. We do not open accounts or trade through them.

What are the five pillars of a neobank score?

A crypto neobank has to work as a bank and as a crypto app, so those two pillars share the top weight. Fees follow, because a banking app's crypto pricing can cancel out its convenience. Each pillar gets a score from 0 to 5, set against the evidence in the review's research file. There is no points table behind a pillar score. It is a judgement on the documented evidence, and it will be compared with other banks as more are reviewed.

Crypto Feature Breadth

25% of the score

What you can do with crypto inside the app, and whether you can take it out.

What the research checks

  • Buying, selling, recurring buys, staking and any separate trading platform the bank offers
  • Whether you can withdraw coins to your own wallet and deposit them back, and on which networks
  • Which features are limited to certain countries or paid plans

Banking Features

25% of the score

How well the account works as an everyday bank account.

What the research checks

  • Local account details (IBAN, sort code, routing number) and the currencies held
  • Cards, transfers and savings features in the published product pages
  • Whether the account is a licensed bank deposit or an e-money account

Fees

20% of the score

What crypto costs inside the app, plan by plan.

What the research checks

  • Crypto trading fees and spreads per pricing plan, from the bank's own fee documents
  • Monthly plan prices in each region we cover
  • Withdrawal and network fees for moving coins out

Asset Coverage

15% of the score

How many cryptoassets you can buy, and whether that list differs by country.

What the research checks

  • Number of tradeable assets, from the bank's published list for each region
  • Stablecoins offered and any restrictions on them in the EU

Trust & Compliance

15% of the score

Who regulates the bank and the crypto service, and what protects your money.

What the research checks

  • Banking and e-money licences, checked on each regulator's own register
  • The company that provides the crypto service and its registration, for example under the EU's MiCA rules
  • Deposit insurance limits and what they exclude
  • Fines, enforcement actions and licence restrictions

How is a neobank's overall score calculated?

Multiply each pillar score by its weight, then add the five results. Here is the arithmetic for Revolut, using the pillar scores published on its review. A strong Banking Features score is offset by a weak Fees score, which is why it lands at 3.9.

What scores do the reviewed neobanks have?

Every published neobank review, read from the same data as the review pages. Our country guides to crypto-friendly banks (UK, US, Canada, Australia) cover banks that are not yet reviewed here, without scoring them.

How the research works

By Skrumble Editorial · Updated

Where does the evidence for a neobank score come from?

From the bank's legal documents and from regulators. Pricing-plan pages and fee PDFs give the crypto costs. Terms and help-centre pages say which company provides the crypto service, which is often not the bank itself. Registers confirm each licence. Revolut's EU crypto service, for instance, is run by Revolut Digital Assets (Europe) Ltd, authorised by CySEC as a MiCA crypto-asset service provider.

Deposit-protection schemes are read at the source. The UK's FSCS limit is £120,000 from December 1, 2025 and applies to deposits; the FCA tells consumers that FSCS protection for crypto is "highly unlikely". In the US, the FDIC says its insurance does not cover crypto assets.

Review sites, comparison tables and social posts are never evidence. A claim that only appears there does not appear in our review.

What changes from country to country?

  • UK: bank deposits are covered by the FSCS up to £120,000, but the FCA says protection for crypto is "highly unlikely".
  • EU and EEA: the company running the crypto service needs a MiCA licence, which the review checks on the regulator's register (CySEC, in Revolut's case).
  • US: FDIC insurance does not cover crypto assets, even when you buy them through an insured bank's app.

How is each neobank fact checked before it goes live?

Through four checks, in this order. A neobank review that fails any of them does not ship.

  1. Claim ledger. Every factual statement (fees, dates, licences, incidents, user numbers) goes into a table with its current value, the source URL, the publisher, the source's own date and the date we opened it. We cut any claim that has no fetched source.
  2. Adversarial challenge. A separate second pass re-opens the sources for every high-stakes item (money, licences, incidents, lawsuits) plus a random 30% of the rest. Where the two passes disagree, the challenge wins.
  3. Sentence-level QA. On the finished draft, every sentence that states a fact must map to a ledger row or a fetched source. We fix or delete any sentence that does not map.
  4. 100-point audit. The audit scores the finished page out of 100 on content quality, search optimisation, sourcing and expertise signals, technical structure and how easily search and AI tools can cite it. Below 75, the page does not ship. The target is 85.

What does a catch look like?

The first research pass on Revolut proposed saying that EEA plans start from €3.99. The challenge pass opened Revolut's pricing pages country by country on October 16, 2026 and found lower prices. In Germany the Plus plan costs €2.99. The review says instead that EEA prices vary by country and names one, instead of giving a single floor that was wrong.

The methodology overview covers the full process and how it changed in October 2026.

Do we open neobank accounts and test them?

No. Skrumble does not open bank accounts, deposit money, buy crypto through them or contact their support. Every neobank review is documented desk research with dated sources.

A score cannot tell you how long onboarding took for one person or whether a specific transfer was held for review. It tells you what the bank's documents promise and charge, who regulates each part of the service, and, as more banks are reviewed, how it compares with them. Where a fee depends on your plan or country, the review shows the range from the published documents.

How often are neobank scores reviewed?

Our target is at least every six months, and each neobank review shows the date it was last updated. Our only neobank review so far was re-researched on October 17, 2026 under the four-check process set out on this page.

These events trigger an earlier check:

  • a change to pricing plans or to crypto fees in any region we cover
  • a new banking licence, or a restriction placed on one
  • crypto services launching or closing in a country
  • a change to the company that provides the crypto service
  • a fine or enforcement action

What happens when a neobank review gets something wrong?

Tell us through the contact page, with the claim and the source that contradicts it. We re-open the primary source. If the review is wrong, we correct it, re-check any pillar score the fact feeds, move the review's updated date and record the change and its source in the research file.

When a correction changes a score, the table on this page changes too, because both read the same data.

Do affiliate deals affect neobank scores?

No. The overall score is calculated from the five pillar scores and nothing else, so commission terms have no way into it. Today the neobank review does not link out with a referral code. The Visit button opens the bank's own website.

If a review ever links out through a partner link, Skrumble can earn a commission when you open an account, and the Visit buttons on reviews are marked as sponsored links. Our country guides to crypto-friendly banks rank only banks with a published review, and they can ship with no ranked pick at all when no reviewed bank fits that country. No bank approves a review before it is published. The full disclosure is on how we make money.

Frequently asked questions

Why do crypto and banking features carry the same weight?

Because a crypto neobank has to do both jobs. A bank with a thin crypto offer is better compared with ordinary banks, and a crypto app without real banking features is better compared with exchanges.

Is crypto in a banking app covered by deposit insurance?

In practice, no. The FDIC says its insurance does not cover crypto assets, and the FCA says FSCS protection for crypto is "highly unlikely". Each review says which part of your balance is protected and which is not.

Why does a neobank's crypto service have a different company name?

Because many banks run crypto through a separate regulated subsidiary or partner. The review names that company and checks its registration, since it is the one holding your crypto.

Did Skrumble test these neobanks?

No. Skrumble does no hands-on testing. Every neobank score comes from dated desk research on bank documents and regulator registers.

How can I check a neobank score myself?

Take the five pillar scores from the review, multiply each by the weight on this page and add them up. The worked example shows the arithmetic. If your total differs from the published score by more than rounding, tell us.
