Two crypto products in one account, priced very differently

De un vistazo

Revolut sells crypto two ways in one account. The app charges 1.49% per trade on Standard and Plus and 0.99% on Premium and Metal, plus a spread, while Revolut X charges takers 0.09% and makers nothing. Revolut is a licensed bank in the UK and the EEA, but crypto sits with separate companies and has no FSCS or deposit-scheme cover. US customers have had no Revolut crypto since October 2023. It is worth using in the UK or EEA if bigger buys go through Revolut X.

Ideal para

Revolut crypto review: the short answer

This Revolut crypto review comes down to one finding. Revolut sells crypto through two products inside the same account, and they are priced very differently. The main app charges 1.49% per trade on the Standard and Plus plans and 0.99% on Premium and Metal, plus a spread Revolut does not publish in the UK, while Revolut X, its exchange, charges takers 0.09% and makers nothing. The app is the default route, and anyone who never opens Revolut X pays for that on every trade.

Safety splits the same way. Revolut is a licensed bank in the UK and the EEA, yet your crypto never sits with the bank. In the UK it is held by Revolut Ltd under an FCA anti-money-laundering registration, and Revolut states that crypto it holds for you is not covered by the FSCS and not safeguarded. In the EEA it sits with Revolut Digital Assets Europe Ltd, a Cypriot firm licensed under MiCA.

US readers can stop here. Revolut has offered no crypto to US customers since 3 October 2023, and its US bank project (preliminary conditional OCC approval on 2 September 2026, launch targeted for 2027) is a plan, not a product. In the US you need an exchange that serves US customers; start with our Coinbase review and our Kraken review.

What can you do with crypto on Revolut in the UK, EEA and US?

In the UK and the EEA you can buy, sell, send, receive, stake and spend crypto in the Revolut app and trade on Revolut X; in the US you can do none of it. The table shows each region as of 16 October 2026.

The token count needs a second look. Revolut says its app and Revolut X each list more than 300 tokens, yet its UK crypto page names only BTC, ETH, USDC "and 30+ other tokens" as sendable to an outside wallet. Much of the catalogue appears to be buy-and-sell only. If you plan to move coins to one of the crypto wallets we review, check the token first.

Spending runs through the Revolut card, which Revolut says can pay with crypto anywhere Visa or Mastercard is accepted, with no exchange fee on top of the exchange rate. The EEA fee schedule says card exchanges incur normal exchange fees, so do not treat it as free. For a dedicated crypto card, compare our Crypto.com Visa card review.

Stablecoins changed the most this year. Revolut stopped USDT purchases for EEA and Swiss customers on 6 July 2026 and converted remaining balances to each customer's base currency on 31 August, citing regulatory and risk considerations, Cointelegraph reported. UK customers keep it, because the UK fee schedule still offers 1:1 conversion between USDT and US dollars (our USDT guide covers the token).

The EEA gained EURR, a euro e-money token announced on 8 August 2026 and issued by Bridge Building S.A., a Stripe company regulated by the CSSF, starting with eligible customers in Denmark, Poland and Portugal.

The US story is short. Revolut stopped new US crypto purchases on 2 September 2023 and ended all access on 3 October 2023, Decrypt reported. Its US website has no crypto page today.

How much do Revolut's plans cost?

Revolut's Standard plan is free in all three regions, and paid UK plans run from £3.99 to £60 a month. EEA prices vary by country, so the table uses Ireland. Figures come from the UK, Irish and US pricing pages as of 16 October 2026.

PlanUKIrelandUSFree ATM per month (UK/EEA)
StandardFreeFree$0£/€200 or 5 withdrawals
Plus£3.99€3.99Not offered£/€200
Premium£8.99€9.99$9.99£/€400
Metal£16.99€17.99$16.99£/€800
Ultra£60€55 (intro offer)Not offered£/€2,000

Above the allowance, UK and EEA cash withdrawals cost 2% (minimum £1 or €1).

The plan sets your app crypto fee. Premium cuts it from 1.49% to 0.99%, so at £8.99 a month you would need to buy about £1,800 of crypto in the app every month (£8.99 ÷ 0.005 = £1,798) before the upgrade pays for itself. Ultra, at 0.49% for £60, breaks even at £6,000 a month. Revolut X has no plan-based pricing. For a crypto buyer, it is the cheaper upgrade.

What are Revolut's crypto fees in the app?

In the Revolut app, each crypto trade costs the greater of a minimum fee or a percentage, with Revolut's spread built into the price on top. These Revolut crypto fees, as of 16 October 2026, are identical in pounds (UK) and euros (EEA).

PlanPercentage feeVolume discountMinimum fee (trades under £/€200)

Ultra0.49%Down to 0% at £/€250k+ in 30 days£/€0.99

Ultra's 30-day volume tiers run 0.49% under £/€10,000, then 0.39%, 0.29% and 0.19%, reaching 0% at £/€250,000 or more.

100 to under 1502.491.490.99
150 to under 2002.991.990.99

Small buys hurt most. A £10 purchase on Standard pays £1.49, which is 14.9% of the trade, and a £50 purchase pays £1.99, or 3.98%. Anything under £2 loses half its value to the fee.

What changed on 10 August 2026

The flat rates are new. Until 10 August 2026, Standard and Plus fees fell with 30-day volume from 1.49% to 0.49% at £250,000 or more, and Premium and Metal fees fell from 0.99% to 0.29%. Schedules published on 7 July 2026 announced the switch for the UK and the EEA alike. A heavy Metal trader on the 0.29% tier now pays 0.99%, more than three times as much.

The spread you cannot see

The spread is the cost the fee table leaves out. Revolut's UK fee page says the market spread is not an additional Revolut fee, but its UK Cryptocurrency Terms say Revolut takes the bid-ask prices of other exchanges and trading partners and then applies "additional spread". The contract is what binds. Assume every UK app trade carries a markup of unstated size. The EEA schedule is more open, disclosing a one-sided Product Added Spread that typically ranges from 0% to 3% of the trade.

Standard and Plus also carry a fair usage fee once your monthly currency exchanges, crypto included, pass £/€1,000 on Standard (then 1%) or £/€3,000 on Plus (then 0.5%). The "fees from 0%" headline on Revolut's crypto pages applies in the app only to Ultra at £/€250,000 or more of 30-day volume, or to swaps between a currency and a stablecoin.

What is Revolut X, and is it cheaper?

Revolut X is Revolut's crypto exchange, used with the same Revolut account, and it is much cheaper than the app, at 0% for makers and 0.09% for takers. A maker posts a limit order that waits on the order book, while a taker fills against an order already there. Revolut X offers market and limit orders, an API and TradingView charts.

The UK volume tiers were introduced in October 2026; versions of the schedule before 15 October showed a flat 0.09%. The EEA Revolut X schedule stays flat. Few retail customers trade $10 million a month, so for almost everyone the number to remember is 0.09%.

One exception catches people out. In the UK, October's updates also added request-for-quote (RFQ) and Convert features to Revolut X, with the fee set to zero and the whole cost carried by the exchange rate Revolut quotes. That brings back an unpublished spread. Use the order book for the 0.09% price.

What does £1,000 of bitcoin cost in the app versus on Revolut X?

On the Standard plan, buying £1,000 of bitcoin in the app costs a £14.90 fee plus Revolut's spread, while the same buy as a taker on Revolut X costs a £0.90 fee. The minimum-fee table stops at £200, so a £1,000 trade pays the straight percentage.

RouteRateFee on £1,000On top
App, Standard or Plus1.49%£14.90Revolut spread (not published in UK)
App, Premium or Metal0.99%£9.90Revolut spread
App, Ultra (under £10k a month)0.49%£4.90Revolut spread
Revolut X, taker0.09%£0.90Order book price
Revolut X, maker0%£0.00Your limit price

Here is the arithmetic. £1,000 × 1.49% is £14.90 and £1,000 × 0.09% is £0.90, so the app fee is about 16.6 times the taker fee (£14.90 ÷ £0.90), before a spread that cannot be computed exactly in the UK because Revolut does not publish it.

An EEA customer buying €1,000 pays the same €14.90 fee plus a Product Added Spread that Revolut says typically runs from 0% to 3%, or €0 to €30, for a typical Revolut-side cost of €14.90 to €44.90 in the app against €0.90 as a taker on Revolut X.

Two extras can move the total. On the app route, if you had already exchanged £500 that month on Standard, £500 of this buy would sit above the £1,000 fair usage threshold and add 1%, or £5.00. Sending the bitcoin to your own wallet then adds Revolut's £3 withdrawal service fee plus the network fee on either route. Fully loaded, the app route costs at least £17.90 plus spread and network fee. Revolut X costs £3.90 plus network fee.

Can you withdraw crypto from Revolut to your own wallet?

Yes, UK and EEA customers can send supported tokens to an outside wallet, and each Revolut crypto withdrawal carries a service fee of £1 or €1 for XRP, XLM, DOT, SOL, AVAX, XTZ, ALGO and ADA, or £3 or €3 for every other token, plus the network fee. Bitcoin and ether fall in the £3 group. The UK fee schedule also says that if the network fee you pay exceeds the one Revolut finally incurs, Revolut keeps the difference.

The service fee has been in Revolut's fee schedule since at least October 2025. It bites on small amounts, since moving £100 of ether costs £3 before the network fee, or 3%. Deposits are free. Withdrawal limits are set per account and shown only in the app.

Withdrawing is the only way to hold your own keys, because on Revolut your coins sit with Revolut as nominee, through custodians it does not name. Check the network before you send, and if self-custody is new to you, read our explainer on what a crypto wallet is.

Does Revolut pay staking rewards, and what does it keep?

Yes, Revolut offers staking on 16 tokens to UK and EEA customers, but how much of the reward it keeps depends on which Revolut page you read. As listed on its staking help page on 16 October 2026, the tokens are ADA, ALGO, ATOM, DOT, ETH, INJ, KSM, NEAR, OSMO, POL, SOL, SUI, TIA, TON, TRX and XTZ. Revolut advertises up to 22% APY in the UK and up to 19% APY in Ireland, both variable.

The commission is where Revolut contradicts itself. Its UK crypto page says "we don't take a cut", while the staking help page says Revolut takes a commission on all rewards and shows the APY net of it. Both the UK and EEA fee schedules reserve the right to deduct between 0% and 50% of rewards, plus a validator fee of up to 3% on some networks.

Read it this way. Revolut currently advertises no platform fee, the APY in the app is the net figure, and the contract lets Revolut keep up to half.

Staked coins stay in Revolut's custody under the Cryptocurrency Terms, and slashing risk still applies, while customers in the US and Hungary cannot stake at all. Our guide to what staking is explains how the rewards are earned.

Is Revolut a bank?

Yes in the UK and the EEA, not yet in the US. Revolut Bank UK Ltd (FRN 981170) was authorised with restrictions on 25 July 2024 and launched as a full UK bank on 11 March 2026, when the PRA lifted them. In the EEA, Revolut Bank UAB has held a Lithuanian banking licence since 13 December 2021. In the US, Revolut has only a preliminary conditional approval.

The UK migration is still running

Revolut said in March 2026 that its 13 million UK customers would move to the bank over a few months, and MoneyWeek reported on 6 August 2026 that accounts were still moving in tranches. Check Details on the app's home screen to see which company holds your money.

After the move, eligible deposits get FSCS cover up to £120,000, the limit in force since 1 December 2025; before it, your money is e-money at Revolut Ltd, safeguarded but outside the FSCS. So £100,000 of cash at Revolut gets FSCS protection only once your account has moved.

In the EEA, Revolut Bank UAB is licensed by the European Central Bank and supervised by the Bank of Lithuania, and eligible deposits are covered by Lithuanian deposit insurance up to €100,000. Your crypto is held by neither bank. It stays with Revolut Ltd in the UK and Revolut Digital Assets Europe in the EEA, beyond the reach of both deposit schemes.

The US bank is a plan

The OCC decision of 2 September 2026 on Revolut Bank US, N.A. still needs FDIC, Federal Reserve and final OCC approval, requires at least $95 million of capital and lapses if the bank does not open within 18 months. The plan routes crypto custody through Revolut Ltd. Revolut says it is on track for a 2027 launch and that approval would let it offer US customers crypto directly. Until then, US accounts sit with partner banks such as Lead Bank and Cross River Bank.

Is Revolut safe for crypto?

Revolut is a large, licensed company, but crypto held there has none of the protection your cash can have. There is no FSCS cover and no safeguarding, and in the UK the Financial Ombudsman Service is unlikely to hear a crypto complaint. The FCA register entry for Revolut Ltd warns that its cryptoasset services are unlikely to be protected if something goes wrong. Revolut says it serves more than 80 million customers worldwide. Size is not cover.

How Revolut holds your crypto

Under the UK Cryptocurrency Terms, Revolut holds your crypto as nominee, which makes you the beneficial owner while your coins sit in pooled accounts with other customers' holdings. Revolut can appoint sub-custodians it does not name, you have no contract with them, and Revolut keeps any benefits third parties give it under those arrangements. Revolut says Revolut X assets are held 1:1, never lent out and mostly kept in cold storage. Those are company claims, and the research for this review found no published proof of reserves.

The EEA licence is stronger. Revolut Digital Assets Europe's CySEC licence, authorised on 20 October 2025 according to ESMA's register, covers custody, exchange, transfers and running a trading platform in 29 of the 30 EEA states, every one except Hungary. A licence is not insurance, though, and Revolut's Irish crypto page says crypto is not covered by investor compensation schemes.

Some EEA customers may still be served by Revolut Ltd if they did not accept the Cypriot firm's terms during the migration, as Revolut's Cyprus help page explains.

The new UK crypto regime

The UK is about to raise the bar. The FCA opened its authorisation gateway for the new crypto regime on 30 September 2026. Firms should apply by 28 February 2027 to keep operating while the FCA assesses them, and the regime comes into force on 25 October 2027. Revolut Ltd's crypto status today is only a registration, so it will need to pass through this gateway. Whether it has applied is not public.

What has gone wrong at Revolut?

Revolut's record includes two customer-data incidents, a payment-system loss of more than $20 million of its own money, four fines from the Bank of Lithuania and an €11.5 million penalty in Italy. In each data incident Revolut said customer funds were not touched.

12 Sep 2026Records handed to fraudsters posing as Italian authoritiesRevolutAbout 680 European customers; funds untouched (Revolut)

The 2022 breach came through social engineering, and Help Net Security reported names, addresses, emails, phone numbers and partly masked card data among the exposed fields. The payment flaw, reported by the Financial Times in July 2023 and covered by UKTN, let criminals exploit a gap between Revolut's US and European systems in 2022, so declined payments were refunded from Revolut's own funds.

Italy's AGCM fined Revolut over commission-free investing claims, aggressive account blocking and unclear IBAN-switch information, and Revolut said it would appeal, City AM reported. The research for this review found no newer action by UK, Cypriot or US regulators.

The September 2026 disclosure matters most to crypto holders. On 12 September Revolut said it had handed customer records to someone using an email account on a genuine government-agency domain, and The Block listed ID documents, selfies, addresses, statements and transaction histories including bitcoin activity among the data potentially exposed, with Revolut saying its systems and customer funds were unaffected. Revolut later put the number at about 680 European customers and said their funds had not been touched, Euronews reported, adding that the requests came from a compromised institutional email account belonging to the Reggio Calabria prefecture in Italy.

A group publicly demanded $3 million in Monero, though Revolut told SecurityWeek it had received no direct contact or demand. Prosecutors in Reggio Calabria opened an inquiry.

How is crypto on Revolut taxed in the UK and the US?

In the UK, selling, swapping, spending or gifting crypto held at Revolut is a disposal for Capital Gains Tax under HMRC rules (gifts to a spouse, civil partner or charity excepted). Paying with the Revolut card from a crypto balance is a disposal too, as Revolut's own crypto page warns.

Can HMRC see your Revolut crypto? From 2027 it gets reports directly. Under the Cryptoasset Reporting Framework, UK crypto service providers must file their first report with HMRC between 1 January and 31 May 2027 and tell their users by 31 January 2027. Revolut offers no HMRC-ready tax report; you download per-token statements in the app or sync them to a tax tool.

US readers have nothing Revolut-specific to report, because Revolut has offered no crypto to US customers since October 2023; our US crypto tax guide for 2026 covers the IRS rules for crypto bought elsewhere. EEA rules differ by country.

Is Revolut good for crypto?

Revolut is good for crypto if you live in the UK or the EEA, already bank with it and are willing to place larger buys on Revolut X; it is poor value for anyone buying meaningful amounts through the main app, and it offers nothing for crypto in the US. The app suits small, occasional purchases next to your current account. On the free plan that convenience costs 1.49% plus a spread.

  • Use Revolut X for anything above a few hundred pounds, since 0.09% for takers and 0% for makers beats the app's 0.99% to 1.49% on every plan below Ultra.
  • Skip Revolut if you are in the US, if you want to withdraw most of the 300+ tokens Revolut says it lists to your own wallet, or if you need a compensation scheme behind your crypto.

The scores in this Revolut crypto review follow our neobank scoring method. Revolut scores well on banking features and asset coverage and loses points on app fees and on trust, after the 2025 and 2026 fines and the September 2026 data handover. If you came for a general Revolut review, the banking side is the stronger half of the product. To compare alternatives, see our hub of crypto neobanks.
