Methodology

Scores come from our published reviews, and each review shows the date it was last updated. Each pillar is independently rated; the weighted average is the overall Skrumble score. See the exchange scoring methodology for full pillar definitions.

How to use the exchange comparison

By Matilde Ferreira · Updated

What does the exchange comparison tool show?

It puts two to four crypto exchanges side by side using the scores from our published reviews. Only exchanges we have reviewed in full appear, fourteen at the moment, and each column links to the full review so you can check the reasoning behind a number.

How do you read the scores?

Every pillar is scored out of 5, and the overall score is a weighted average set by our exchange scoring methodology:

Exchange score weights, from our published methodology.
PillarWeightWhat it covers
Security and trust30%Proof of reserves, licensing, incident history, custody and 2FA
Fees25%Maker and taker fees, spreads on simple buys, withdrawal fees
Asset variety20%Tradeable assets, fiat currencies, derivatives
Ease of use and features15%Onboarding, mobile and desktop apps, earn and staking, API
Customer support10%Response and resolution times, help docs, hours and languages

Read the pillars, not just the total. Two exchanges with similar overall scores can differ a lot on security and trust, which carries the most weight, or on fees for the way you trade. Each review shows the date it was last updated.

What can't the comparison tell you?

  • Whether you can use the exchange where you live. In the EU, the last MiCA transition periods ended on 1 July 2026, and ESMA says clients of unauthorised firms do not get MiCA's protections, so check the ESMA register. In the UK, crypto firms are registered with the FCA for anti-money-laundering purposes only until a full regime that is expected to start on 25 October 2027. Our country availability tool and country guides cover this.
  • What proof of reserves proves. Staff at the US audit regulator, the PCAOB, warn that these reports are not audits and cover a single point in time.
  • This week's fees. Exchanges change their tiers: Kraken raised its entry-tier Kraken Pro fees to 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker in July 2026. Use the fee calculator for the cost of an order.

Frequently asked questions

Which crypto exchange has the best score?

It depends on the pillar you care about, so pick the exchanges you are considering and compare them here. For a ranking that adds local licensing and currency rails, see our country guides, which don't always follow the global score.

Do affiliate deals change the scores?

No. Some links on Skrumble are affiliate links, and we explain how we make money on our disclosure page; scores come from the review methodology, not from those deals.

Why isn't my exchange in the list?

We only compare exchanges with a full, published review. The others on our exchange hub are still on our review desk.
